Who Needs a Plumbing License in Indiana?

Indiana requires anyone who contracts for or performs plumbing work to hold an IPLA Plumbing Contractor license (license numbers begin with PC). This applies to plumbing work in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

A homeowner may perform minor repairs on their own property without a license. However, any work that involves:

…typically requires a licensed contractor and, in most jurisdictions, a permit.

License Requirements

To obtain an Indiana Plumbing Contractor license, an applicant must:

  1. Pass the state plumbing contractor examination — administered by PSI Exams (exam.psiexams.com)
  2. Demonstrate documented plumbing experience — typically several years of field experience
  3. Submit the application to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency with required fees
  4. Carry liability insurance — proof of general liability coverage is required

The IPLA administers plumbing contractor licensing under IC 25-28.5.

License Renewal and Continuing Education

Indiana Plumbing Contractor licenses expire on December 31 of the license period. Contractors must renew through IPLA’s online portal and complete continuing education requirements before renewal.

Failure to renew results in an expired license. Working with an expired plumbing contractor license is illegal and subjects the contractor to disciplinary action.

Journeymen and Apprentices

Indiana does not issue a separate state journeyman plumber license — individual plumbing workers operate under the Plumbing Contractor’s license. The licensed contractor is responsible for supervising all plumbing work performed under their license.

Apprentices enter the trade through programs registered with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
